Hi, My name is Randy,
Hi, My name is Randy, I have lived in Vietnam for five years, part-time on Cham Island, and I can see the ocean from where I am sitting. I have been a lifeguard, mile-swimmer and a part-time sailor. I have a plan to build my own catamaran.
I am a Mile Swimmer, diver, Lifeguard, slalom water-skier, Scuba and sailing enthusiast. I have had a lifelong interest in van living and boat living, high-tech, elegant solutions, camping and minimalism. I’m a thinker and problem-solver.
I grew up learning electronics, amateur radio and photography from my father. I learned reading and determination from my mother. I sent messages and spoke to my aunt and uncle by radio. together dad and I built electronics in his workshop. I assisted my father develop black-and-white images in his darkroom. Apparently I also inherited his love for sailing.
I like to think I’m creative. I used to call myself a lazy perfectionist, but I no longer use that term. I like creative solutions – expensive or not – that are elegant, original and practical. I have been building websites since 2003.
When I visited my friend, Glenn on his sailboat, I realized he could live anywhere. I suddenly remembered my own connection to water. I remembered being a lifeguard in school, the mile swim in scouts, watersking and scuba diving. What excited me in particular, was the freedom that came with a boat.
What if I could live anywhere? I began researching everything I could find about sailing. At first, everything was confusing – strange nautical terms – ropes are called ‘sheets’. And there are wild opinions about boat styles and ways of doing things.
I kept reading. Sailboats led to sailing, which led to catamarans, which led to solar electric, which led to DIY. There are new and old boats, mono-hulls, catamarans, tri-hulls. There are racing, cruising, houseboats and pontoon boats. It seemed like everyone liked their catamarans. What did it all mean?
I researched a little more. Catamarans, even old ones, are much more expensive than traditional sailboats. But Why? And, the electric cats are even more expensive than their sailing cousins. What if catamarans weren’t any more expensive than sailboats? I set out to find answers.
Let me say right up front, that I’m a guy who thinks outside the box. Some would say I think too much. Maybe. I get some really good ideas. I have put together some new ways to skin a catamaran, and I’m going to share them with you.
What I found may surprise you. It surprised me. Not only that, but I think I have found a way to reduce their cost. It turns out you can be a local hero by cleaning the oceans and get yourself a new boat. It may cost you less than you think. A lot less.
This won’t happen overnight. There is work to be done. And, you will have to do some of the work yourself. But if you follow along and roll up your shirtsleeves, I think we can make the world a better place for everyone. Some effort is required and there’s lots to learn.
Join me on a journey to discover world class freedom. Together we can make the world a better place. And, you can find the freedom to live on your own boat. Let’s get started!
Randy
